St Malachy’s, Hillsborough
Oil on board
“After a week of work, I thought I would go get a bottle of gin. Walking up through Hillsborough village was a bizarre experience during lockdown. With flip flops on and a hot still day with no cars, it felt like a holiday. I passed the church and remembered I’d been meaning to paint it for some time so I stopped to get some reference photos.
Not wanting to use the obvious angle from the front, I found myself in the graveyard to the side. I soon forgot about the reference photos and was taken over by a sense of peace and calm. I hadn’t realised how badly the pandemic had affected me. So for 20 minutes or so I got to stop and breathe, mindfulness I guess. That’s what I’ve tried to capture in my painting."
