Sophie Smith has always been influenced by medieval art and design and this is reflected in her work which has a whimsical quality. She slipcasts and hand builds simple shapes using earthenware casting slip and semi porcelain clay and then creates different textures by cutting into the wet clay and using gloss, semi-opaque and matte brush on glazes. Finishing touches include gold and platinum precious metals as well as mother of pearl lustre, resulting in each piece being fired three times.
